Why We Like It

Debuted for 1974, Ford’s downsized, compact Pinto-based Mustang II weathered the worst years for the American automobile but kept the Mustang lineage going through the EPA and DOT-dominated 1970s. Mustang II also defied the OPEC oil embargo, Energy Crisis, Watergate, and geopolitical tensions that defined the tumultuous decade. To the chagrin of enthusiasts, the Mustang II was not even available with a V8 engine until 1975 – a wheezy 141hp shadow of the 302ci small-block V8. Nonetheless, faithful Ford racers, including Wayne Gapp and Jack Roush, “Dyno Don” Nicholson, and other top names, carried the Ford banner at the dragstrip with wicked Mustang II Pro Stock race cars, and some fans built wild street machines from the model, as well.

Described by the seller as a show car, this very clean 1977 Mustang ll stays true to its roots with a 302ci V8 engine. Performance is obviously strong with a mild cam, Hedman headers, and a 2 ½-inch dual exhaust system with Flowmaster mufflers. The interior is exceptionally clean and nice, and the exterior was refinished in a high-quality base/clear coat paint finish. Rust-free and highly detailed, this is one pony that will run. The seller advises the car is still on a PA title that documents 33k miles of use at the time of issuance.classy-and-clean-street-machine-351ci-powered-1977-ford-mustang-ii-coupe00i0i 2LECQtwMaA0z 0CI0t2 1200x900

Valuation Verdict

While a nice, compact sporty car, the Mustang II really only offered something approaching higher performance with the 1977-78 Cobra II that actually contained an upgraded handling suspension underneath it all. This clean and very nice ‘77 Mustang II coupe offers real performance but has not been so over-the-top modified as to discourage actual driving enjoyment. It could very well be the car Ford might have built, had the company’s attorneys not been so harried by the regulators of the time. If you dig the Mustang II and like to drive, this one looks like a good buy at the fair market asking price, and we suspect you couldn’t build one like it for anywhere near the ask.
