Why We Like It

Is it a minivan, a station wagon, or an SUV? We don’t know, but this 1995 Mitsubishi RVR Sports Gear AWD Wagon is certainly a fun and versatile JDM import. Actually, Mitsubishi officially designated the first-generation 1991-2002 RVR as a “compact multi-purpose vehicle” or MPV. These early examples feature a neat side-mounted sliding door, giving a minivan vibe and the versatile rear seat can be flipped up or down and moved fore and aft, depending on your need for passenger space or cargo room. Loading from the rear is facilitated by a swing-out rear spare tire carrier, and the fold down rear hatch provides easy access. Mitsubishi’s twin-cam, 16-valve ‘4G63’ gasoline engine delivers power through an automatic overdrive transmission and full-time 4-wheel drive system, good for seller-stated fuel economy figures of up to 30 MPG.

According to the seller, 50km have been traveled, verified and certified, to boot, which converts to approximately 31k mi. The RVR is advertised as being in great running and driving order, with a tight suspension and confident road manners, without squeaks or rattles, consistent with Mitsubishi’s strong reputation for assembly quality.go-anywhere-jdm-fun-machine-31k-mile-1995-mitsubishi-rvr-sports-gear-awd00U0U 7bb5LhIXmaBz 0jm0ew 1200x900

Valuation Verdict

We can hear the wheels turning already. Since this type of RVR is also capable of easy engine swaps, with turbocharged Lancer powertrains using the same dimensions and engine mounts as the milder but still capable original powerplant, this RVR could make an amazing “sleeper”, if desired. Of course, you could simply enjoy this neat 4WD vehicle as it is – it looks good, with limited mileage, and it will likely deliver plenty of enjoyment and utility for years to come. No confirmed auction sales can be found, but as more JDM cars are being imported to North America under the 25-year rule, we look forward to seeing how they will perform in the collector car market. For now, we’ll call it ‘Fair Market’ at or near the seller’s ask.
