Why We Like It

*Note: The owner of this righteous Dormobile Camper has reduced their price $13k since we first featured it two months ago. Now is the time to pick up this ultra rare rig!

Britain’s legendary Land Rover requires little, if any, introduction. Featuring the proven capability to traverse much of the most forbidding terrain and weather Mother Nature can dish out, the Land Rover brand stands proudly as “The Best” in 4x4 technology today. An interesting variation on the Land Rover theme is the Dormobile Camper, with its swing-up roof configuration yielding vastly improved interior room and surprisingly comfortable living and sleeping quarters on the move. According to the seller of our subject vehicle, only 830 Dormobile conversions were produced on the Land Rover chassis from 1961-1975 by Martin Walther Ltd in Folksetone, England.

While it was still in the UK, the rather anemic original 2.25L gasoline engine was swapped in favor of a very robust 4.3L V6 engine developing 195 peak horsepower and more importantly, 260 pounds-feet of peak torque, while still getting 15 miles per gallon. Land Rover’s famed 4x4 system and a 4-speed manual gearbox with a very desirable Fairey overdrive unit deliver the truck’s newfound power. While never totally restored, the vehicle has been sympathetically maintained and repainted in Land Rover 'Bahama Gold' – a factory-available color choice beginning in 1971.

Valuation Verdict

Prices for these immensely capable and usable Land Rovers are all over the map, with sales over the past few years ranging from $16k to $37k – both results booked by Bring a Trailer in 2017. It bears repeating that our subject vehicle is one of just 830 built in the UK in period – as opposed to a subsequent conversion using the Dormobile system’s components. Our subject example also features the hallmarks of proper maintenance and thoughtful, functional updates for heightened enjoyment and functionality. While still not cheap at the seller’s reduced asking price, it’s rare and they’re not making any more of them, but we think it's getting closer to 'Fair Market', in our opinion.
