Why We Like It

Having built pickup-style trucks since the Type 13 of 1934, Nissan entered the American light-duty truck market with its 521 model in 1968. Steadily updated and improved in keeping with American tastes and needs, Nissan’s pickups reached a new peak by mid-1986 with its new D21 series “Hardbody” models. Named in recognition of their double-wall cargo beds and rugged, purposeful styling, these pickups were manufactured in two basic body styles: the Japanese-designed “A” body in single and dual-cab versions, plus the “S” body King Cab designed at Nissan’s styling studios in San Diego, California. Both feature different frontal shaping, with North American models utilizing a different hood and wider, flared front fenders, and both Standard and King Cab versions available. Success was strong, with the Hardbody line quickly earning respect for its durability. Both 4-cylinder and V6 engines were available, and Nissan’s renowned 4x4 drivetrains provide the ability to traverse tough terrain. D21 Hardbodys were produced until the advent of their D22 successors in 1997.

As the seller relates, it has no mechanical issues, a smooth-shifting transmission, and benefits from good maintenance and on-time service, including oil changes every 4k miles using Castrol GTX oil. The seller advises the truck was mostly towed behind their RV for use around local campsites, and it’s in overall good condition consistent with the mileage. It’s being sold due to the seller’s age and fact they’re no longer in need of an extra vehicle, and with new brakes and a fresh oil change, it’s ready to go!

Valuation Verdict

Nissan’s pickups of the ‘80s and ‘90s solidified the marque’s reputation for reliability and quality construction in this lucrative and competitive market. Surprisingly, few of these very desirable Hardbodys are found offered online compared to their Japanese brethren, Toyota, but Bring a Trailer has sold a few higher mileage examples in the $10k-$15k range over the past few years. Our subject is a high-spec example that looks very nice all around and we have to consider it very well bought at or around the seller’s affordable asking price.
