The product of the wizard-like engineers at Ford’s SVT (Special Vehicle Team) racing and high-performance division, the 1993 Ford F-150 SVT Lightning was an inspired and highly popular limited production pickup truck with equal attention placed on performance, handling, sportiness, and even a useful towing capacity. Suspension upgrades and special alloy wheels were included, and according to Ford Motor Company, the Lightning was capable of lapping a racecourse as fast as, or faster than, a contemporary Mustang, and it features a 240hp, 5.8L V8 engine at its heart, which is the same specification as the 1993 Mustang SVT Cobra. Just 5,276 were built, including this 1 of 2,585 red painted example.
Extremely clean and good looking, this 1993 Ford F-150 SVT Lightning is as nice as its 68k seller-stated miles would normally indicate. As the seller relates, it’s in virtual as-new condition thanks to proper storage and no use in snowy conditions, although we have to say the carpets are a little worse off than we’d like. A certificate shows it is Lightning #1457 of the 5,276 built, while performance is dramatically enhanced with the 351W engine rebuilt to a 377ci stroker and equipped with a New 70mm BBK throttle body, breathing out through Bassani long-tube headers, X-pipe and Thrush mufflers with electric bypass cutouts. A 2,500cfm dual electric fan and new Bosch battery and fuel pump are other welcome supporting updates. The transmission was custom built by Rodney DeGroot, including the torque converter and Level 10 valve body with low first gear kit. Power delivery is maximized with a Moser rear end equipped with 35-spline axles, 4.30:1 gears, and a full spool. Newer 17-inch tires have less than 500 miles of use and this two-person, adult-owned Lightning is a must see that’s ready to show, cruise, or race as desired.
These special Ford pickups confirmed the broadness of the company’s expanded high-performance program of the 1990s and vividly recalled Dodge’s fast and cheeky “Little Red Express” trucks of the late ‘70s, in many respects. According to online auction results, about ten examples of the original 1993-1995 SVT Lightning have sold on Bring a Trailer alone, with realized prices ranging from $12k-$25k depending on mileage and condition. Our subject seems to be a high-quality example with limited ownership and choice high-performance upgrades for an even more exciting driving experience, and we think it’s priced to sell within a reasonable timeframe, representing ‘Fair Market’ in our opinion.
